I had the opportunity to be one of the first curriculum developers at Papa's Pumpkin Patch. I developed learning activities which were implemented into field trips within Papa's Pumpkin Patch. Schools, daycares, and other groups came from many different backgrounds from all around the state of North Dakota.
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)
I had the opportunity to be one of the first AVID tutors at Bismarck High School. I was able to work with a variety of students from many different backgrounds. Each of these students had the ability to attend college someday, but due to some of their circumstances (e.g. first generation student to attend college, low income) the idea of college was a stretch for them. It was my job as an AVID tutor to help them realize college was a possibility for them and an achievable dream. Another important part of AVID I had the pleasure of experiencing was guided inquiry. I would go lead tutorials with a group of students on some of their homework questions. These tutorials were strictly inquiry based and focused on collaboration. Through this experience, I learned how important it is to let the students take control of their own learning and how important it is to have the student specifically identify their point of confusion. Giving the student the answer was not the solution, but showing them the resources they have will help and lead them to the answer.
Missouri River Educational Cooperative Extended School Program (MREC ESP)
I was a Youth Leader for MREC ESP at Dorothy Moses Elementary School. As a Youth Leader, it was my responsibility to provide the students with academic and social lessons. I worked with many Kindergarten and first grade students from a Title I school. I learned a lot about classroom management and the importance of procedures in the classroom. I was also able to work with students who came from different backgrounds and who had disabilities.
